This past Friday, July 5, was the 30th anniversary of the premiere of the hit sitcom Seinfeld, my favorite show of all time. As part of the celebrations, I was granted\u00a0exclusive\u00a0<\/em>access to the Seinfeld archives, where I discovered a script for an unaired episode for the show’s never-to-be tenth season. Below is the script for the episode entitled “The Baseball Card Shop.”<\/p>\n

[SCENE<\/strong>: JERRY AND KRAMER ARE WALKING DOWN THE SIDEWALK IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD. THEY SPOT A SHOP WITH A “GRAND OPENING” SIGN HUNG FROM THE CANOPY.]<\/p>\n

Kramer:\u00a0<\/strong>Look at this, Jerry, a store selling nothing but baseball cards.<\/p>\n

Jerry:<\/strong> George and I used to love cards when we were kids. We used to sit for hours going through our cards with wads of bubblegum in our mouths and trading cards back and forth.<\/p>\n

[Camera cuts to Kramer who puts a wad of bubblegum in his mouth. Jerry and Kramer peer through the store window, looking at cards displayed in a case.]<\/em><\/p>\n

Jerry:<\/strong> Wow, would you look at that? All those Mickey Mantle cards are hundreds of dollars each!<\/p>\n

[Camera cuts to Kramer who puts another wad of bubblegum in his mouth.]<\/em><\/p>\n

Jerry:<\/strong> I used to have that one there! But in 1965, there was this Mets rookie card that had 4 players including Ron Swoboda and Tug McGraw, and George\u2019s father convinced me that 4 Mets rookies were better than one Yankees player.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

[Jerry continues to look through the window, visibly frustrated.]<\/em><\/p>\n

Jerry:<\/strong> Let me see something here.<\/p>\n

[Jerry opens the door to the shop and walks in. Kramer follows with an ever-growing hunk of bubblegum in his mouth. ]<\/em><\/p>\n

Jerry:<\/strong> Uh, excuse me! How much – –<\/p>\n

[Kramer, looking in a glass display case, shouts out and interrupts Jerry.]<\/em><\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> How much is this Keith Hernandez autograph?<\/p>\n

[Shop owner briefly looks up, then looks back down at a pile of cards he is sorting.]<\/em><\/p>\n

Shop owner:<\/strong> It\u2019s twenty-five dollars.<\/p>\n

Jerry:<\/strong> [to Kramer] Are you done?<\/p>\n

[Kramer looks at Jerry with a huge smile, revealing his giant wad of bubble gum.]<\/em><\/p>\n

Jerry:<\/strong> How much is a 1965 Ron Swoboda rookie card worth?<\/p>\n

[The shop owner pops his head up again.]<\/em><\/p>\n

Shop owner:<\/strong>\u00a0’65 Swoboda \u2014 beautiful card. Got 4 Mets on there including Tug McGraw.<\/p>\n

Jerry:<\/strong> Yeah, that\u2019s the one. How much is it worth?<\/p>\n

Shop owner:<\/strong> Well, it\u2019s a high number card, which means it\u2019s a short print. Not as many of them were printed as the other cards, so it\u2019s more rare.<\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> [smacks Jerry\u2019s upper arm] Oh, mama!<\/p>\n

Shop owner:<\/strong> It\u2019s probably worth five, maybe ten dollars in nice shape.<\/p>\n

Jerry:<\/strong> Five or ten dollars? So you wouldn\u2019t trade a 1965 Mickey Mantle for it?<\/p>\n

Shop owner:<\/strong> Not a chance.<\/p>\n

Jerry:<\/strong> I\u2019ve gotta talk to George.<\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> [to shop owner] Hey, do you buy autographs?<\/p>\n

Shop owner:<\/strong> Uh, yeah, sure, if they\u2019re of good players.<\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> [to Jerry] I\u2019ve gotta talk to Elaine.<\/p>\n

[SCENE<\/strong>: INTERIOR, JERRY’S APARTMENT. JERRY IS READING A NEWSPAPER. GEORGE WALKS IN THE FRONT DOOR.]<\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> Jerry, you won\u2019t believe what happened to me today. I\u2019m walking down the street, minding my own business, when – –<\/p>\n

Jerry:<\/strong> Yeah, yeah, that\u2019s nice. Listen, I\u2019ve gotta ask you something. Do you remember that 1965 Mickey Mantle card I traded you back in the day?<\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> Sure, why?<\/p>\n

Jerry:<\/strong> Well, Kramer and I were coming back from the coffee shop, and\u2026<\/p>\n

[Kramer flings the apartment door open and enters the apartment.]<\/em><\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> Did you tell him about the cards?<\/p>\n

Jerry:<\/strong> I was just doing that! Anyway, George, we were coming back from the coffee shop and we noticed this baseball card shop opened, so we went in, and that Mickey Mantle card I used to have is worth a few hundred dollars.<\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> A few *hundred*?<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Jerry:<\/strong> Yeah, but hey, do you remember how your dad convinced me to trade it to you for that Ron Swoboda rookie card?<\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> Sure. Four guys are better than one.<\/p>\n

Jerry:<\/strong> Well, that card is only worth five or ten bucks. I think your dad was trying to rip me off!<\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> You *think<\/em>*? Listen, they\u2019ve still got my cards in the attic, so next time I go over there I\u2019ll get it and if we sell it, we\u2019ll split the profits 70\/30.<\/p>\n

Jerry:<\/strong> 70\/30?<\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> Yeah, what, no good? It\u2019s really my card, you know. You traded it to me.<\/p>\n

Jerry:<\/strong> Because your dad ripped me off!<\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> 60\/40?<\/p>\n

[The apartment door opens and Elaine walks in.]<\/em><\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> Why don\u2019t you guys just cut the card in half and you each get half of it?<\/p>\n

Elaine<\/strong>: Hey, Jerry. George. [turns to Kramer] Solomon. What\u2019s going on?<\/p>\n

Jerry:<\/strong> Oh, George\u2019s dad ripped me off as a kid and took a valuable Mickey Mantle card from me.<\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> Hey Elaine, I gotta ask you a favor. Can you call up Keith Hernandez for me?<\/p>\n

Elaine:<\/strong> My ex-boyfriend Keith Hernandez?<\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> Yeah, see, he owes me a favor for helping him move. There\u2019s this baseball card shop that opened and I want to sell some of his autographs to the owner.<\/p>\n

Elaine:<\/strong> So let me get this straight. You want me to call an ex I broke up with so he can do you a favor that will make you some money? Why can\u2019t you do it?<\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> My phone is broken!<\/p>\n

[Kramer walks out of the apartment and closes the door behind him. Elaine shakes her head.]<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n

[SCENE<\/strong>: FRANK AND ESTELLE COSTANZA’S KITCHEN. GEORGE IS EATING DINNER WITH HIS PARENTS.]<\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> Hey dad, I meant to ask you. Do you still have my old baseball cards in the attic?<\/p>\n

Frank:<\/strong> Why do you ask?<\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> Well, Jerry found out that there\u2019s a card he traded me that\u2019s worth a few hundred dollars, and\u2026<\/p>\n

Frank:<\/strong> A few *hundred*? [claps hands] Hot DOG!<\/p>\n

[Estelle pours more potato chips into the bowl.]<\/em><\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> Yeah, a Mickey Mantle card. Anyway, we\u2019re gonna sell it and split the profits, uh\u202670\/30.<\/p>\n

Frank:<\/strong> 70\/30? It\u2019s your card! He traded it to you!<\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> Only because you pressured him to!<\/p>\n

[Frank sighs, claps his hands together, and looks down.]<\/em><\/p>\n

Frank:<\/strong> Well, as much as I\u2019d love to give you your collection back, I\u2019m afraid I have some bad news. We threw it out the last time we cleaned out the attic.<\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> You threw out my collection?<\/p>\n

Estelle:<\/strong> I don\u2019t think we threw it out, Frank.<\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> How could you throw out my collection?<\/p>\n

Frank:<\/strong> [raising his voice] It was sitting around collecting dust!<\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> But it was my collection! What right do you have to throw it out?<\/p>\n

Estelle:<\/strong> [screaming off-camera] Go look for the cards in the attic, Frank!<\/p>\n

Frank:<\/strong> [screaming] I threw them out with my own two hands!<\/p>\n

\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n

[SCENE<\/strong>: COFFEE SHOP INTERIOR. ELAINE IS SITTING IN A BOOTH WITH JERRY.]<\/p>\n

Elaine:<\/strong> So I call Keith, tell him the situation, and that was it. He didn\u2019t even ask how I was doing or try to get me to see him!<\/p>\n

Jerry:<\/strong> Did you want him to?<\/p>\n

Elaine:<\/strong> It would have been nice.<\/p>\n

Jerry:<\/strong> Would you have seen him?<\/p>\n

Elaine:<\/strong> No, but he doesn\u2019t know that!<\/p>\n

[George walks in and sits at the booth.]<\/em><\/p>\n

Jerry:<\/strong> So? Did you get the Mickey Mantle card?<\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> [visibly ashamed] My dad says\u2026he threw my collection out.<\/p>\n

Jerry:<\/strong> He threw it out? But that was YOUR collection!<\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> I know! He says it was just sitting around collecting dust.<\/p>\n

Elaine:<\/strong> Oh, like you!<\/p>\n

[George fakes a laugh and rolls his eyes, then turns to Jerry.]<\/em><\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> My mother doesn\u2019t think he actually threw the collection out.<\/p>\n

Jerry:<\/strong> You think he\u2019s lying?<\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> I wouldn\u2019t put it past him! So Elaine, what\u2019s going on with Kramer\u2019s Keith Hernandez thing?<\/p>\n

Elaine:<\/strong> Oh, you won\u2019t be-LIEVE it! I called Keith for Kramer, told him the whole story, and that\u2019s it! He didn\u2019t even ask how I was doing!<\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> Did you want him to?<\/p>\n

Elaine:<\/strong> [gritting her teeth] It would have been nice!<\/p>\n

[SCENE<\/strong>: BASEBALL CARD SHOP INTERIOR. KRAMER IS CARRYING A BUCKET THROUGH THE DOOR.]<\/p>\n

Shop owner:<\/strong> Hey there, how can I help you?<\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> Yeah, hey. I\u2019ve got 25 baseballs signed by former Mets great Keith Hernandez. I figure if you sell \u2018em for $25 a pop, you pay me $15 and we both win!<\/p>\n

[The shop owner rifles through the bucket briefly.]<\/em><\/p>\n

Shop owner:<\/strong> Yeah sorry, I don\u2019t think I can help you out here.<\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> I thought you said you buy autographs of good players!<\/p>\n

Shop owner:<\/strong> Sure, but these don\u2019t have any kind of authentication.<\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> Authentication?<\/p>\n

Shop owner:<\/strong> Yeah, paperwork to prove that Keith Hernandez signed these.<\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> But he did sign them!<\/p>\n

Shop owner:<\/strong> Well, I don\u2019t know that!<\/p>\n

[Kramer picks the bucket up and starts to storm out of the shop. Frank walks into the shop holding a shoebox.]<\/em><\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> Hey! Frank! What are you doing here?\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Frank:<\/strong> K-man! Just brought some baseball cards over for this fine gentleman to see.<\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> Oh, you found them!<\/p>\n

[The shop owner approaches Frank and opens the box.]<\/em><\/p>\n

Shop owner:<\/strong> Let\u2019s see what you\u2019ve got. [rifles through the box] You\u2019ve got the right players, but the condition is horrendous.<\/p>\n

Frank:<\/strong> [taken aback] The condition?<\/p>\n

Shop owner:<\/strong> Well yeah, these cards are in horrible shape. Looks like they went through the washing machine 40 years ago. Look at this 1965 Mickey Mantle card \u2014 someone wrote \u201cGEORGE\u201d in ballpoint pen on the back.<\/p>\n

Frank:<\/strong> [screaming] I\u2019ll kill him!<\/p>\n

Shop owner:<\/strong> I couldn\u2019t give you more than $50 for these cards in this shape.<\/p>\n

Frank:<\/strong> $50? Do you believe this? C\u2019mon, Kramer, let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n

\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n

[SCENE<\/strong>: INSIDE JERRY’S APARTMENT. JERRY AND GEORGE ARE SITTING ON THE COUCH, WHILE ELAINE IS IN THE KITCHEN EATING A BANANA.]<\/p>\n

Elaine:<\/strong> Run this by me one more time. Jerry, you traded the card to George because Frank pressured you into it. And now that you know it\u2019s worth money, George wants to sell the card and split the proceeds 60\/40 \u2014<\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> 70\/30.<\/p>\n

Jerry:<\/strong> 50\/50!<\/p>\n

[Kramer walks into the apartment.]<\/em><\/p>\n

Elaine:<\/strong> \u2026split the proceeds with you.<\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> Who\u2019s splitting proceeds?\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> No one, apparently.<\/p>\n

Jerry:<\/strong> Yeah, Frank threw George\u2019s cards out.<\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> Oh, you didn\u2019t hear? He has your cards. I saw him down at the shop today.<\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> [incredulously] At the shop?<\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> Yeah, he was there trying to sell them. Apparently they\u2019re in real bad shape though. The owner only wanted to give him $50 for them.<\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> Sell them? Sell MY cards?!<\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> Well, yeah, but\u2026<\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> Oh, this is RICH! I gotta go talk to him.<\/p>\n

[George walks out of the apartment.]<\/em><\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> Yeah hey, Elaine, listen, I need you to call Keith for me again.<\/p>\n

Elaine:<\/strong> Again? I thought your phone was fixed! Why can\u2019t YOU call him?<\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> [sheepishly] I\u2019m too embarrassed!<\/p>\n

Elaine:<\/strong> What now?<\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> Turns out the shop owner won\u2019t buy those autographs because they aren\u2019t authenticated. I need him to go down to the shop with me and tell the owner he signed them.<\/p>\n

Elaine:<\/strong> Can\u2019t I just go and vouch for you?<\/p>\n

Jerry:<\/strong> Yeah, I can see it. Tuck your hair back, slap on a fake mustache, you could almost pass for Keith.<\/p>\n

Elaine:<\/strong> [picking up her purse and heading for the door] Guess I\u2019ve got a phone call to make.<\/p>\n

\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n

[SCENE<\/strong>: THE COSTANZA HOUSE. THERE’S A KNOCK ON THE DOOR. ESTELLE ANSWERS. GEORGE IS AT THE DOOR.]<\/p>\n

Estelle:<\/strong> Georgie! What a surprise.<\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> Yeah, yeah. Where\u2019s dad?<\/p>\n

[Frank emerges from the other room.]<\/em><\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> Dad, we\u2019ve got something to talk about.<\/p>\n

Frank:<\/strong> George! I\u2019m glad you\u2019re here. I found your baseball card collection!\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Estelle:<\/strong> [yelling from the other room] I told you we didn\u2019t throw them out!<\/p>\n

Frank:<\/strong> [yelling] I thought I threw them out! [turning to George] Here you go. Just like you left \u2018em.<\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> [sarcastically] Well gee, thanks.<\/p>\n

Frank:<\/strong> Now, of course, there\u2019s the matter of my finder\u2019s fee.<\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> Finder\u2019s fee?! You\u2019re charging me a finder\u2019s fee?!<\/p>\n

Frank:<\/strong> Just a modest amount. Say, $50. If the cards are worth hundreds, that\u2019s a small price to pay. Maybe they\u2019re worth thousands!<\/p>\n

[George peers at Frank incredulously.]<\/em><\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> Thousands? Thousands?! I know you brought them to the shop and that they\u2019re only worth $50!<\/p>\n

Frank:<\/strong> [screaming] That\u2019s because you didn\u2019t take good care of them as a child!<\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> [screaming back] I was eight years old!<\/p>\n

Estelle:<\/strong> [screaming from the other room] You tried to sell George\u2019s cards?!<\/p>\n

Frank:<\/strong> [screaming back] I was saving him a trip!<\/p>\n

\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n

[SCENE<\/strong>: KRAMER IS WALKING ON THE SIDEWALK WHILE CARRYING THE BUCKET OF BASEBALLS. KEITH HERNANDEZ IS WALKING NEXT TO HIM.]<\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> Keith, thanks again for doing this.<\/p>\n

Keith:<\/strong> No problem. You really helped me out with my move.<\/p>\n

[Kramer and Keith walk into the card shop.]<\/em><\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> Yeah, hey, remember me? [sarcastically] I brought my authentication. [points to Keith]<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Shop owner:<\/strong> You signed all these?<\/p>\n

Keith:<\/strong> Yes, sir. Twenty-five signed baseballs.<\/p>\n

Shop owner:<\/strong> Alrighty, I\u2019ll buy them. How\u2019s 50 bucks sound?<\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> [taken aback] For all of them?<\/p>\n

Shop owner:<\/strong> Yeah, I mean, no one\u2019s really knocking down my doors for his autograph.<\/p>\n

Keith:<\/strong> But I\u2019m Keith Hernandez!<\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> 1979 National League MVP\u2026<\/p>\n

Keith:<\/strong> 11 Gold Gloves\u2026<\/p>\n

Shop owner:<\/strong> Listen, it will take me years to sell these. 50 bucks, take it or leave it.<\/p>\n

Keith:<\/strong> Leave it! C\u2019mon, Kramer, let\u2019s go.<\/p>\n

[Keith and Kramer walk out of the shop.]<\/em><\/p>\n

[SCENE<\/strong>: ELAINE IS WALKING DOWN THE SIDEWALK HOLDING A SHOPPING BAG. SHE SEES KEITH HERNANDEZ WALKING TOWARD HER.]<\/p>\n

Elaine:<\/strong> Hey, Keith!<\/p>\n

Keith:<\/strong> Elaine! Good to see you again.<\/p>\n

Elaine:<\/strong> Yeah! How are you doing?<\/p>\n

Keith:<\/strong> Well, I helped Kramer try to sell some baseballs.<\/p>\n

Elaine:<\/strong> I heard!<\/p>\n

Keith:<\/strong> Would you believe the guy wouldn\u2019t pay more than two bucks a ball? I mean, I\u2019m Keith Hernandez!<\/p>\n

Elaine:<\/strong> Yeah, wow, that\u2019s rough.<\/p>\n

[Awkward silence ensues for several seconds.]<\/em><\/p>\n

Elaine:<\/strong> So, anyway\u2026<\/p>\n

Keith:<\/strong> Yeah, hey listen, I gotta get going. But it was great to see you again!<\/p>\n

[Keith walks off in the opposite direction.]<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n

[SCENE<\/strong>: OUTSIDE THE BASEBALL CARD SHOP. KRAMER HAS SET UP A TABLE ON THE SIDEWALK TO SELL HIS BASEBALLS.]<\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> [screaming] Keith Hernandez baseballs! Get your Keith Hernandez signed baseballs! Real authentic autographs!<\/p>\n

[A man walks up to his table with a little kid.]<\/em><\/p>\n

Man:<\/strong> Hey, how much for the baseballs?\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> Hey! [addressing kid] Hey little man! These are signed Keith Hernandez baseballs. He was the 1979 National League MVP.<\/p>\n

[The kid stares blankly at Kramer, who turns instead to the man.]<\/em><\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> They\u2019re 25 bucks each.<\/p>\n

Man:<\/strong> [hemming and hawing while looking at a baseball] And he really signed this?<\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> Oh, absolutely. Right in front of me. He \u2013<\/p>\n

[Kramer is interrupted by the shop owner opening the door to the shop, stepping out, and addressing the man and little kid.]<\/em><\/p>\n

Shop owner:<\/strong> Hey guys! I\u2019ve got a Keith Hernandez signed baseball in here. 20 bucks and it\u2019s yours!<\/p>\n

[The man and the kid start to walk toward the shop.]<\/em><\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> You don\u2019t know that Keith Hernandez signed that ball! He definitely signed mine! [raising his voice] I watched him sign them!<\/p>\n

[The man and the kid step foot in the shop.]<\/em><\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> [yelling] I helped him move!<\/p>\n

[Elaine walks into Jerry\u2019s apartment, carrying her shopping bag.]<\/em><\/p>\n

Elaine:<\/strong> Okay, now THIS you won\u2019t believe. I saw Keith today on the street.<\/p>\n

George:<\/strong> And?<\/p>\n

Elaine:<\/strong> And, I asked him how he was doing. And he told me. But he never asked how I was doing!<\/p>\n

Jerry:<\/strong> It\u2019s almost as if he doesn\u2019t care.<\/p>\n

[Kramer walks into Jerry\u2019s apartment, carrying the bucket of baseballs. He walks over to the table and picks up a card.]<\/em><\/p>\n

Kramer:<\/strong> Hey, Joe Pepitone! Oh man, I used to love him.<\/p>\n
